*Windham County, Connecticut is situated in the north east part of the state, and contains 620 sq. ms. The surface is uneven, and some of it stony and rough; soil, generally adapted to grazing, with fertile alluvial meadows on the streams. Drained by Quinnebaug and Shetucket rivers and their branches, which afford extensive water power. The Norwich and Worcester railroad passes through it from south to north. It has extensive manufactories, particularly in its north east part. Organized in 1726. Capital, Brooklyn. There were in 1840, neat cattle 23,597, sheep 39,504, swine 12,562; wheat 8,999 bushels produced, rye 48,278, Indian corn 173,003, buckwheat 30,653, barley 5,904, oats 179,027, potatoes 497,991, silk cocoons 3,001 pounds, sugar 2,549; 115 stores, capital $309,750; 1 furnace, 8 fulling mills, 15 woolen factories, 54 cotton factories 105,016 spindles, 19 tanneries, 1 distillery, 57 grist mills, 109 saw mills, 50 oil mills, 3 paper factories. Capital in manufactures $2,223,387. 8 academies 317 students, 166 schools 7,749 scholars. Population 28,080.
