*Tolland County, Connecticut is situated in the south east part of the state, and contains 600 sq. ms. The surface is hilly; soil, fertile, adapted to grazing, and to some kinds of grain. Long Island sound bounds it on the south, on which are a number of excellent harbors. Watered by Thames river, formed by the junction of Shetucket and Yantic rivers, which afford excellent water power. Quinnebaug river is a principal branch of Shetucket river. Pawcatuck river bounds it on the south east, and Connecticut river on the south west. Capitals, Tolland and Norwich. There were in 1840, neat cattle 27,441, sheep 62,395, swine 14,256; wheat 10,138 bushels produced, rye 37,633, Indian corn 186,587, buckwheat 16,966, barley 21,875, oats 122,355, potatoes 394,301; 1 commission house in foreign trade, capital $20,000; 247 stores, capital $770,450; 11 lumber yards, capital $76,500; capital invested in fisheries $1,190,000; 24 fulling mills, 23 woollen factories, 16 cotton factories 29,013 spindles, 20 tanneries, 2 potteries, 7 rope factories, 57 grist mills, 64 saw mills, 3 oil mills, 5 paper factories, 4 printing offices, 3 binderies, 3 weekly newspapers. Capital in manufactures $1,661,725. 17 academies 747 students, 231 sch. 10,790 scholars. Population 44,463.
